HBO slates docuseries “Edge of the Earth”; “The Last Movie Stars” heads to HBO Max

HBO and Teton Gravity Research have announced a new documentary series, Edge of the Earth — which blends the action-adventure, sport, travel and nature documentary genres — for a July 12 premiere on HBO. New episodes will roll out weekly each Tuesday, and will also be available to stream on HBO Max.

The four-part series follows four groups of elite action-adventure athletes on never-before-accomplished missions. Shot around the globe and featuring previously undiscovered realms of nature, each instalment sees the adventurers journeying into the wild to test their physical prowess and mental fortitude as they venture up and down mountains, journey down rivers and sail across oceans.

The series boasts cutting-edge aerial photography and immersive video in some of the world’s least accessible and rarely seen locations, exploring the marvels of nature’s beauty while highlighting the risks of climate change, deforestation and the threat that human industry poses to nature.

Edge of the Earth is directed by Steve and Todd Jones and produced by Drew Holt. Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller and Bentley Weiner serve as executive producers for HBO, with coordinating producer Abtin Motia.

In other HBO news, its streaming platform has been named as the new home for the six-part docuseries The Last Movie Stars, which tells the story of the relationship between Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman.

Directed by actor Ethan Hawke, the CNN Films series was previously announced for the streaming service CNN+, which was shut down in April. HBO Max will premiere all six parts of the documentary on July 21.

The Last Movie Stars is executive produced by Martin Scorsese, along with Amy Entelis, EVP for talent and content development for CNN Worldwide and Courtney Sexton, SVP for CNN Films, who also serve as executive producers. Mario Andretti serves as a coproducer, with Emily Wachtel and Lisa Long Adler of Nook House Productions, Ryan Hawke of Under the Influence Productions and Adam Gibbs all producing.
